Researchers in Italy have analyzed the United States of America’s government SEER cancer database and have determined that individuals being diagnosed with mesothelioma are only slightly higher when they have had radiation treatment than those individuals that have not.

Mesothelioma specialists and scientists had determined that radiation exposure increased your chances of a mesothelioma diagnosis, but this new finding shows that the chances are minimal. An individuals exposure to asbestos through their occupation and environment is still the main cause for mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Diagnosis After External Beam Radiation Treatment

Reducing the size or even eliminating tumors through External Beam Radiation (EBRT) is the goal of  mesothelioma treatments. Unfortunately, healthy tissue will absorb some radiation and this is what causes the negative side effects of radiation treatments. The main concern has always been, does this access radiation cause mesothelioma. Based on the research performed in Italy, it has been determined so far that the likelihood is minimal.

Radiation and Mesothelioma Concerns

The study author Andrea Farioli, M.D. is a Epidemiologist at the University of Bologna. She determined that through analyzing 40 years of mesothelioma data the individuals receiving radiation treatment did not result in a dramatic increase in cases of mesothelioma. This is great news for cancer patients that were concerned about having EBRT and then developing mesothelioma. It was determined however, that the cancer patients who survived the longest after EBRT, also had the highest risk for developing mesothelioma. This was not a surprise because of the latency period of mesothelioma and the decades required for it to metastasis into mesothelioma.
