Searching for a Cure for Mesothelioma Cancer
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer caused by asbestos. Since it is rare, it does not get as much attention as other cancers that draw a majority of the research. There is not a cure for mesothelioma, but new research, surgical techniques and scientific breakthroughs are making great strides to improving the life expectancy of mesothelioma patients.
There are around 3,000 mesothelioma diagnosed cases each year compared to over 200,000 diagnosed cases of lung cancer. Even though it is rare, multimodal treatments that combine surgery, chemotherapy and radiation together have shown to have great success in increasing survival rates in mesothelioma patients.
There may not be a cure today, but researchers, physicians and scientists are optimistic that they can continue to move forward in improving the life expectancy of those diagnosed with mesothelioma.
